TOULOUSE
Until the 19th century, Toulouse was characterised by a strong tradition of everyday folk singing, which led the city council to establish the first free school of vocal music in 1820 – the forerunner of the Conservatoire.
To revive this tradition, the COMDT organises the ‘Cantadas’ on the third Friday of every month. Inspired by the Pyrenean ‘Cantèras’, these convivial gatherings bring together people from all walks of life to sing together, with no distinction between performers and audience. This practice keeps the Occitan vocal heritage and other traditions alive, whilst ensuring that Occitan remains a living, festive language passed down orally.
Led by professionals and students from the COMDT and the CRR, these evenings showcase a specific repertoire each month. In partnership with the Ethos app, developed by Benjamin Bouyssou, and the centre’s archive, the events are gradually enriched with new traditional recordings, which are played at the start of each session.
