When dance tames Mérimée’s heroine

Forget folklore: choreographer François Mauduit brings us a Carmen for our times. A feminist parable ahead of her time, the revolutionary Carmen drove a few fine banderillas into the flanks of patriarchy. A performance that is both sensual and powerful, brought to life by exceptional dancers and choreography that is as much classical as it is contemporary, paying homage to ‘Carmen’, the icon of passion.

Inspired by Georges Bizet’s four-act comic opera, based on Prosper Mérimée’s novel, this ballet revisits the myth of its free-spirited and rebellious heroine, a great feminist ahead of her time.

The original plot of the work is respected here, whilst being profoundly re-examined. The dance – elegant, expressive and theatrical – powerfully conveys the full complexity of romantic love: attraction, rejection, union and betrayal. The music, too, breaks down boundaries. Bizet’s iconic score engages in dialogue with some of the composer’s lesser-known works, reimagined through contemporary arrangements blending jazz, electronic music, guitar, piano and vocals. The result is a breathtaking version, paying a beautiful tribute to both the heroine and her creators.
