He began his career as a portraitist, and portraits played a major role in his work until 1888. His work includes over 1,700 paintings, nearly 200 engravings, hundreds of drawings, sketches and illustrations, as well as a number of sculptures and works of applied art. A virtuoso engraver and painter with a sharp eye, Félix Vallotton made his mark in avant-garde circles with his stylized compositions and eye for detail. With a sharp eye, graphic precision and a fine sense of irony, he created fascinating scenes of everyday life and intimate portraits.
