BEZIERS
An eminent member of the Société d?Étude des Sciences Naturelles de Béziers, Jean-Miquel (1859-1940) published much of his scientific work in its Bulletin. Owner of the Barroubio estate in Saint-Jean-de-Minervois, he devoted his life to the history, archaeology, geology and paleontology of the region, building up extensive collections, some of which are now housed in the Musée de Minerve.
In paleontology, his major contributions concerned the Paleozoic faunas of the Montagne Noire and the discovery of Upper Cretaceous vertebrate deposits around Saint-Chinian. His research, conducted alongside Charles Depéret, professor at Lyon University, led to the first studies of dinosaurs in this region.
