EXPOSITION BIODIVERSITE DANS LES FRICHES

TOULOUSE

Description

Often perceived as a non-place, vacant land waiting to be redeveloped, it turns out that wastelands are much richer and more diverse than the natural spaces that surround them: parks, gardens, cemeteries and so on. Audrey Muratet has teamed up with photographer Myr Muratet and graphic designer Marie Pellaton to produce a flora of almost 300 common species of urban wasteland, the only one to date on these environments. Finally, ecologist François Chiron has installed his automatic cameras to monitor the lives of daytime and nocturnal animals.

Waste land is proving to be a formidable habitat for plants, animals and insects, and the interactions they establish there. Urban-phobic species with little tolerance of the urban turmoil can flourish there freely, sheltered for a time. They are also safe havens for travelling plants from all over the world.

These researchers and artists have been able to grasp the ecological, plastic and political interrelationships present in these spaces, and to construct a singular vision of urban wastelands that is reflected in this exhibition, which combines large-format photographs and botanical repertory.
