AGDE
If, in the words of French writer and diplomat Jean Giraudoux, “sport is the art by which man liberates himself from himself”, some pursue their high-level sporting ideals guided by that “little something extra”. This makes them artists in their own right, both on the field and in life. Such is the case of Jean-Pierre Rives, an outstanding professional rugby player and legendary captain of the XV de France, who was nicknamed “Casque d’or” (Golden Helmet) by Roger Couder. This former winner of two Grand Slams with the XV de France, whose sporting reputation is well established, now exhibits his paintings and sculptures all over the world (Shanghai, Sydney, Dubai, San Francisco and New York), and counts Hugh Jackman, Claude Lellouche, Yannick Noah, Pierre Richard and Taika Waititi among his admirers.
In life, as on the rugby field, Jean-Pierre Rives? artistic fibre has always been more prevalent than the high-level sportsman he once was. A pupil of Albert Féraud, academician and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1981, as well as Ladisnas Kijno, inventor of lyrical abstraction, Jean-Pierre Rives has always devoted his time to artistic creation.
This memorable, patriotic and generous artist, recognized both in France and internationally, who was the first artist after Rodin to exhibit his monumental sculptures in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris, will be exhibiting his work for the first time this summer in Cap d?Agde.
This is an opportunity to discover a series of 17 canvases based around the cockerel, the hexagonal and sporting emblem par excellence, which Jean-Pierre Rives imagined as a tribute to France, sport in general and rugby in particular.
Associated with this theme will be a second series of 16 paintings, geometrically abstract and highly colorful, reminding rugby fans of the immense canvas imagined for the 2023 World Cup at the Stade de France. 3 model sculptures and 1 3D sculpture will complete the thirty or so paintings on display.
Don?t miss the chance to discover the singular creations of this exceptional artist!
