Fauvism is an art movement that emerged around 1900, centred on Henri Matisse.
In 1900, Derain, de Vlaminck and Van Dongen exhibited their work together, and their paintings caused a sensation: they were nicknamed ‘the Fauves’ because the colours roared in their paintings.
