From the moment the Canal du Midi opened to navigation in 1674, the Négra lock played a very special role for travellers.
At that time, the post boat provided a daily passenger service between Toulouse and Castelnaudary. Halfway along the route, the Négra lock offered a stopover where passengers could eat, rest and pray.
