REVEL
To mark European Heritage Days, the town of Revel invites you to celebrate the restoration of the belfry during a weekend dedicated to heritage and culture.
What’s on /
– Thursday 17 September, at 8.30 pm at Ciné Get, a talk on the Belfry: The Founding of the Bastide of Revel
Oral tradition holds that the town of Revel was founded (on 8 June 1342) with the inaugural ‘Fixatio Pali’ ceremony taking place at the site where the belfry now stands.
This belfry (with its market hall, square and covered walkways) is an iconic building representing the seat of all the bastide’s powers (royal, economic, administrative, judicial and military) and is highly representative of the ‘bastide phenomenon’.
Jean-Paul Calvet, the town’s historian (who has written its history in five volumes totalling over 2,000 pages), will give a (free) talk outlining its history and functions.
