VAUDREUILLE
Take this rare opportunity to explore the interior of this thousand-year-old chapel, which is currently undergoing restoration. With its 1,000 years of history, this ruined building is being restored to create a ‘Centre for Culture and Sharing’, with the support of the Fondation du Patrimoine and patrons. The Saint-Martin Chapel dates back to the year 1000. Until the 17th century, the village of Vaudreuille was centred around the chapel. With the construction of the Canal du Midi and the Saint-Ferréol reservoir, the village moved to the banks of the Laudot in the early 18th century. This chapel was abandoned and looted. It housed the recumbent effigy of the Marquis de Vaudreuil, who was Governor of Canada. He founded the town of Vaudreuil-d’Orion near Montreal.
This opening to the public offers an opportunity to admire the remains of 15th-century frescoes still preserved inside the building and to gain a better understanding of the challenges involved in its preservation.
The visit will also provide an opportunity to learn about the restoration project, which includes plans to create a Centre for Culture and Exchange.
