LES BELLES ONDES – CONCERT
‘The Secret Art of Women Composers’
Sunday 8 March – 8.30pm
With Stéphanie Elbaz, piano
How does a masterpiece come into being when history denies you the right to exist?
Through this narrated recital, the secret art of female composers introduces us to women whose
creativity clashed with the social and artistic conventions of their time. Active between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, a pivotal moment when Europe was discovering new aesthetic impulses, these composers made their voices heard, sometimes in the shadows, but always with intensity. Among them were two iconic French figures: Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944), the first woman to receive the Legion of Honour for her music, whose elegant and refined work evokes the spirit of the Belle Époque, and Rita Strohl (1865-1941), a singular and visionary composer.
