QUARANTE
Hailing from the Minervois region, La Mal Coiffée has been reinventing polyphonic singing for over twenty years—a form in which poetry and the Occitan language are inextricably linked to folk expression. During this evening’s performance, the four performers will invite us to (re)discover the works of poet Joan-Maria Petit in a tribute concert.
A native of Quarante, Joan-Maria Petit (1941–2020) was a major figure in Languedoc literature. His playful poems are like flashes of life, their imagery drawn from nursery rhymes, folktales, and popular songs. His universal, sensual, and highly musical language led him to collaborate with numerous musicians and singers.
In 2014, La Mal Coiffée decided to set the poet’s texts to music alongside Laurent Cavalié. Carried by the sensitive and profound singing of these four women’s voices, the simple and authentic words of Joan-Maria Petit’s texts will resonate in the heart of Quarante, in a vibrant tribute to the poet.
Guest artist Laurent Cavalié will share the stage with La Mal Coiffée to unveil a few previously unpublished poems set to music.
