Monsieur Jourdain has big dreams: he wants to become a ‘gentleman’.
When an ordinary bourgeois man struggles to gain entry into high society and imitate the nobility, pretences abound, intrigues arise, tutors come and go, and misunderstandings follow one after another…
Turks turn up uninvited, marriages are arranged, and arguments rage over vowels and consonants amidst a whirl of powdered wigs and flamboyant costumes.
First performed in 1670 for the court of Louis XIV, this comedy-ballet blends theatre, music, song and dance.
Jean-Paul Rouve, absolutely breathtaking in the role of Monsieur Jourdain, portrays a bourgeois figure who is both guileless and mischievous.
A baroque comedy, full of dancing and singing – not to be missed!
