Archéopop at the Musée de l’Éphèbe
Archéopop brings together archaeology and popular culture. Through popular media such as films, comic books, manga, video games and board games, Archéopop offers an original and accessible approach to archaeology.
A range of exhibition stands and interactive activities will be on offer: comic books, children’s books, board games, video games, cartoon screenings…
Saturday • 5.00 pm Lecture: ‘The Aesthetics of Batman’s Body: A Confidently Classical Legacy’
by Lionel Lopez, PhD in History and Civilisation of the Ancient Worlds (since 2025, General Coordinator of the Rencontres d’Archéologie de la Narbonnaise ‘RAN’).
Drawing on the costumes designed for the ‘Batman’ films – often discussed for their unapologetic anatomical aesthetic – this lecture aims to move beyond the controversy to examine their true visual references. Far from being mere provocation, these sculpted armours—which emphasise muscles, idealised torsos and physical power—are part of a long tradition inherited from Greek art, where the perfection of the body expresses heroic nature.
Echoing the collections of the Musée de l’Éphèbe and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, and more specifically the famous statue of the Agde Ephebe, this exhibition will demonstrate how the canons of ancient statuary — idealised youth, controlled tension, noble bearing — are carried forward into contemporary superhero figures. From Alexander the Great, immortalised in Greek sculpture, to the cinematic Batman, the visual language is the same: that of the body as a symbol of power, virtue and legend.
