Centred on Jean-Marie Guilcher’s book *La contredanse*, a turning point in the history of French dance, this exploration will provide an opportunity to examine, in the present day, how forms of power shape our attention, define our spaces and guide the ways in which we ‘see’ the world and the bodies that move within it. From recreational practices to social struggles, dance forms linked to the contredanse—whether through adherence to its principles or their deliberate subversion—pave the way through our imaginations and memories; how do legends, through fragments or sidesteps, enable us to unravel our future practices and allow other representations to emerge within them?
