TOULOUSE
Madalitso Band consists of Yosefe Kalekeni and Yobu Maligwa, a duo who play
music characterised by sincerity and unstoppable energy. Their stage presence and DIY instruments reveal a versatile, unpretentious journey. Regarded as true musical prophets in Malawi, they were discovered by the renowned Swiss label Bongo Joe Records. Having travelled across several continents – from the far reaches of Africa to the United States, via almost all of Europe – they have performed at internationally renowned festivals (Womex, Womad, Roskilde, Sauti Za Busara, MNT Bushfire, Sziget…). Trained on the streets, the two musicians place their homemade instruments at the heart of their compositions. With the help of their handmade babatone (a kind of single-stringed bass), a guitar and their intertwining voices, Yobu and Yosefe create a sound at the crossroads of banjo, kwela, gospel and African folk, which immerses their audience in an
acoustic trance that is both minimalist and vibrant, deeply rooted in Malawian tradition yet undeniably contemporary.
