Description

La Scène Flottante ouvre le bal avec une légende du reggae : le groupe britannique UB40 !
45 years of hits, global smash hits such as ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Kingston Town’ and ‘Here I Am’ – a set list that has been thrilling crowds for decades.

Today, with singer Matt Doyle, the band takes you on a journey through the rhythms of reggae

Formed in Birmingham in 1978 by brothers Robin and Ali Campbell, UB40 drew inspiration from the ska and reggae rhythms imported from Jamaica, skilfully blending the richness of various Caribbean styles to create this unique sound – an elegant fusion of Jamaican traditions and British pop that is so characteristic of their music. But long before they achieved international recognition, it was whilst signing on for unemployment benefits in a Birmingham hit hard by the economic crisis that they came up with the idea for their band’s name: UB40. The name refers to the British form for claiming unemployment benefits (Unemployment Benefits, Form 40).

In 1983, UB40 recorded *Labour of Love*, an album of reggae covers, which reached number one in the UK charts, driven in particular by *Red Red Wine*, a cover of Neil Diamond’s song. In 1985, the band conquered America with their cover of Sonny and Cher’s ‘I Got You Babe’, performed as a duet with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. With over 100 million records sold since the start of their career and more than a decade in the UK charts, UB40 is, and will remain, the world’s best-known reggae band.
