« UNE SOIRÉE CHEZ LES GODEBSKI »

SAINT-FELIX-LAURAGAIS

Description

Born into a family of Polish nobility, Cipa Godebski (1874-1937) counts illustrious intellectuals and artists among his ancestors. His father Cyprien II Godebski (1835-1909), a sculptor whose career was crowned with success, held social and artistic gatherings in the 1880s, where the most eminent personalities of his time met. Cipa’s half-sister, Misia Sert (1872-1950), with whom he always maintained a close relationship, was a favourite with painters and poets, and her role and influence in the Parisian artistic scene at the beginning of the twentieth century were considerable. In the early 1900s, Cipa, who had just married Ida Kasparek, moved to Paris. The young couple built up a network of friends and artists, inviting them to meet informally at their home. Their salon soon became one of the most sought-after at the time, attracting painters, musicians and writers alike. Pianist Ricardo Viñes introduced the Apache circle, which included the composer Maurice Ravel, to Cipa and Ida’s salon. A few years later, around 1915, the Godebskis’ salon welcomed new guests including Jean Cocteau and Erik Satie, and later Francis Poulenc, a future member of the Group of Six.

Works by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Roussel, Erik Satie, Francis Poulenc.

With Marie Cubaynes, mezzo-soprano, Xavier de Lignerolles, tenor, and Florence de Lignerolles, piano.
