BEZIERS
At the end of the Second Empire, the Biterrois winegrowing economy expanded rapidly, making the fortunes of large landowners, most of whom were urban bourgeois who had acquired tenant farms at the sale of national property and converted them to monoculture vineyards.
Today, some of these châteaux are still successful wine producers, but many have been converted into bed & breakfasts, restaurants, public buildings or gardens. Since the 1990s, awareness of this forgotten heritage has been growing, and the protection of châteaux has been stepped up.
In this exhibition, Michel Dumergue invites us to take a sensitive stroll around some of the jewels inherited from a rich and luminous winegrowing past.
