AGDE
‘Ressac’ is the title of a painting or a series of works by the French painter Marc Champieux. This contemporary visual artist, born in Montpellier in 1947, lives and works in the Agde and Sète area.
“Works of art are the children of silence,” said Marcel Proust, who knew what he was talking about. Champieux speaks little. He paints. It is therefore a formidable honour to put into words what one feels when standing before his paintings.
It is easier to describe a creative journey marked by high standards. Champieux makes no concessions to current trends; his work is a quest. Yet, working in the South, he could easily have succumbed to the temptation to produce works that would readily find buyers, by painting a few fields of lavender and poppies of the sort that flood certain galleries.
His painting, in a word, is not easy. Non-figurative rather than abstract, his paintings are always developed from an observation of reality, a sensation, and are constructed through lines of force and colours that have evolved over the years. Initially sombre, the palette has lightened, incorporating a touch of blue and red, and varying shades of grey, always in search of light – a luminous centre that invites the viewer to embark on a journey of their own: the journey towards the painting to earn this encounter with the artist’s imagination that the work affords, but also the journey itself, in a sort of ‘through the looking-glass’ experience.
Indeed, the painting calls out to us; that is why Champieux’s work is so moving. It sets us in motion; it suggests that there is something to be discovered – an inner home, whatever name we give it.
This lies beyond the painting itself; everyone is invited to seek it out, if not to find it.”
