TOULOUSE
There is much to say about the Garonne, but only one way to get as close as possible to the truth: by sailing along it. For an hour, you’ll feel the gentle lapping of its waters. If you thought you knew its history and its whims, think again: the city and its heritage take on a different character when viewed from the river.
You don’t need to be a top-class athlete: setting off from Port Viguerie, you’ll paddle in a kayak (provided) past the Hôtel Dieu St Jacques, then under the Pont Neuf. You’ll then paddle alongside the Prairie des Filtres to reach the tip of the St Michel lock. Finally, via the Quai de Tounis and the Daurade, head towards the Pont St Pierre, from where you’ll return to Port Viguerie.
On this trip at water level, you’ll take the time to experience the river and focus on little-known historical details. The Garonne washes, waters, irrigates and powers the water mills with its force – yes, that’s true. But did you know that it also deposits sediment, weaves together a wild natural landscape and inspires artists with ideas of escape?
This boat trip helps to challenge certain clichés that have become ingrained in our memories and to refresh even the most curious of minds!
