TOULOUSE
Understanding the monument through its forms and symbols
This family tour highlights the role of architecture in remembrance. The angular lines, the raw concrete and the distinctive spaces (crypts, tunnels, passageways) are all symbols that tell the story of the resistance fighters’ courage and the history of the war. The aim is not to show the war in its most harrowing detail, but to help visitors appreciate what these places signify and why they were designed in this way.
A word of warning for parents: although the tour is suitable for children, the monument is a Second World War memorial. Some of the references may be unsettling for younger children.
